LUX

Project Overview

The Lux Coffee Table is a unique piece of furniture utilizing offcuts from Austin School of Furniture classes. The design is built around offsetting the legs and moving the shelf out of the same plane as the top to create a surprising experience for the user.

Solid hard maple forms the modern pill-shaped top hovering above a shop-sawn maple and plywood shelf. A subtle shadow line separates the shelf from the beech frame, which is joined with mortise and tenons. The joinery of the coffee table frame is angled to offset the shelf from the top and to shift the legs slightly to create a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture that requires a closer look to fully appreciate. The coffee table is finished with a mixture of tung oil and polyurethane for a high quality semi-gloss protective finish.
